BOOKSHELF: EUROPE'S PROMISE

Steven Hill - Europe's Promise has been ten years in the making. I began traveling to Europe in the late 1990s to conduct interviews and research Europe's political institutions. What resulted is a book that is a comprehensive look at modern day Europe and the "European way" of development, which I view for the most part as a hopeful and inspiring beacon for a world facing the twin perils of economic insecurity and global warming.

America remains a powerful country, but in a new era in which American economic, political and global leadership has lost some of its direction and appeal, Europe has stepped into the breach. Yet you would never know that if you receive your information from the American media.

The New Yorker's Hendrik Hertzberg strongly recommends the book, writing: "Like a reverse Alexis de Tocqueville, Steven Hill dauntlessly explores a society largely unknown to his compatriots back home. Sweeping away the ideological posturing, he shows us exactly how the modern European Way works and the promise it holds for an America which has slipped to become, in terms of social, economic and energy policy, the Old World."

Parag Khanna, author of The Second World: Empires and Influence in the New Global Order, says: "Steven Hill ends the transatlantic debate over which economic and political system is superior: Europe wins. While America and China fight for oil and minerals, Europe already achieves more with less. Indeed, the path to the American Dream is the European Way."

And Ralph Nader plugs the book, writing, "Europe's Promise should startle, inform, and galvanize Americans in raising the ante in favor of a political economy where people matter first." ORDER

Mark my words. Liberal utopianism will end up going the way of communism in USSR and China. The weasels will seize power and transform bad to worse. Oops, it's already happened. Local community is the only way, but there again the biggest asshole always wants to be prez of the PTA.
