Overheard in Portland Oregon by Rich: "I've been to Denmark. That's basically the same as IKEA."

Yes, this sounds like something you might hear an American say. It's apparent stupidity does, however, mask some underlying truth.
Where to begin? Well, let's first mention that IKEA is a Swedish company, not Danish. That said, it is rather amazing how obsessed the average Dane is with interior decoration (largely due to two factors: 1) everybody feels the need to uphold the country's high reputation as a design leader, and 2) the fact that the weather really sucks for long periods, requiring long indoor time, which prompts tarting the place up a bit). Furthermore, IKEA stores, having quite a good basic selection at reasonable prices, are quite popular, especially with students and younger people in Denmark, as well as in Norway and Sweden. But to equate Denmark with IKEA, is actually without any meaning beyond the reference to the Danish decor obsessions.
