NEARLY ONE THIRD OF AMERICANS UNDER 40 THINK STEWART AND COLBERT ARE TAKING PLACE OF NEWS MEDIA
Among all Americans, 24% say programs like The Colbert Report and The Daily Show are taking the place of traditional news venues, but 45% do not think so. . .
Thirty-six percent (36%) of Americans have a favorable opinion of Jon Stewart, host of "The Daily Show," while 35% have a favorable view of Stephen Colbert of "The Colbert Report." Twenty-two percent (22%) regard both Stewart and Colbert unfavorably. . .
The findings are more bad news for one traditional news outlet - daily newspapers. A survey released earlier this month found that most young readers are rejecting daily print papers but are not going to the local paper's website as an alternative.

Every time I look closely at some patch of idiocy, I see people in power who refuse to be told.
It makes me think we should make it mandatory for every institution to have an office equivalent to that of the mediaeval jester. Jesters were licensed to say all the things that courtiers couldn't possibly say for fear of being killed, such as the truth.
Perhaps if no meeting could be held without jesters supplying home truths, institutions like newspapers would become healthy again through being forced to stop being mindlessly partisan.
Surely it'd be worth a try?
I like the jester idea.
With both local and national news full of fluff, prostituted to the ruling class, and refusing to tackle the hard issues, it's no wonder that people go to shows that explore current events with humor. What real news filters through is so awful that if we don't laugh about it, we will cry.
